Kitchen Remodel Rockdale

PROJECT:        Kitchen Remodel (North Richland Hills, Texas)
HOME:               1920 sf built in 1977
OBJECTIVE: Update kitchen with more overall space and lighting.
DURATION:   10 Days

The following photo gallery shows the before pictures, some of the design efforts, and the resulting work.  You can “click” on each photo to enlarge and see any additional information.  Further scope details and lessons learned follow below.

SCOPE:
  • Structural – Remove fur-down ceiling above cabinets
  • Cabinets – Replace all upper and re-face sink base cabinets.  Custom paint inside / out
  • Countertops – Replace with “granite”-looking laminate
  • Backsplash – Add texture with tile with mural over sink
  • Electrical – Replace all switches and plugs with Decora™ outlets
  • Lighting – Replace florescent strip with cans and add under-counter task lighting.
  • Appliances – Replace oven / cook-top with slide-in convection range.  Re-used all other appliances.
  • Plumbing – Replace sink and all fixtures
  • Walls – Remove wallpaper and texture / paint.  Repair ceiling where previous light strip installed.
  • Flooring – No change – left in place
LESSONS LEARNED:
  • Countertops — The “granite”-look laminate was great.  Much lower cost with the rich look.
  • Cabinets.  Overall, it would have been better to replace all the cabinets instead of just the uppers.  The overall cost would have been close plus the quality of the new cabinets were better.
  • Over-Range Microwave — Initially was located too low and made kitchen feel smaller with just this one item.  Final location was 22″ above range cook-top.  Can be higher (24″) for taller clients.  Bottom of upper cabinets were 18″ above countertop.
