Our team was working in a neighborhood where we noticed one of the garage doors looked out of alignment (see picture to left). When looked at closely, we noticed that the driveway (or the house) was 1 foot higher than the house …. and this wasn’t the only one. We walk down the alley and noticed the next 5 houses having the same issue. Why — some areas are prone to significant ground shifting (both up and down). In many cases, when the homes are build in areas like this, they have peer and beam foundations — with the peers driven down to bedrock. But …. the driveways, and other structures like retaining walls, don’t have this kind of support and will shift. Often in these same neighborhoods, you’ll find that the roads are not level and have humps and / or waves.
